Our ‘back to basics’ Concept
We strive to make a paradise for the inhabitants of the land we farm....from the wildlife to the cattle. Every morning this year for the first time in years we have 4 "cranes" mingling with the cows as they are brought in for milking. We recently purchased a rear breed Irish Moiled cow and calf which we have since named as Moon Shine Solas and Rua Bawn. The Irish Moiled is our rarest cattle breed. It is a traditional Irish breed of ancient lineage with a long history as a dual purpose hardy animal, producing both high quality beef and milk. That Saint Bridgit could only drink the milk of a cow with red ears, makes it highly lightly that they were
widely domesticated by 450AD. Rua Bawn will be the sire of all progany on the farm by 2009.
All our farming practises are guided by favourable days in the moon's cycle.
Potato growing, weeding and harvesting is only carried out on root crop days as well as leaf crops on appropriate leaf days. Hence the name MOON SHINE DAIRY FARM. The dairy herd of
Friesian, Ayrshire and Friesian/Ayrshire X are treated with herbal remedies as are all the calves. All of our animals are fed organic haylage and hay, which is saved on the farm at Ladestown. Meal ration is organic and is GM free. All of the animals are allowed to roam freely on the farm and when indoors, they lay in a large straw bedded shed. All of these comforts provide a stress free environment for the cows and calves.
